JAPANESE ATTACK

FIERCEST YET

BOMBING OVER WIDE AREA

(Received September 10, 1.20 p.m.)

SHANGHAI, September 9,

A Japanese attack today is described as the fiercest of the campaign. The Chinese counter-attacked, but failed to recover the lost ground. The Japanese are bombing the enemy from the air over a wide area.

The Japanese have proclaimed the triangular area between Shanghai, Hankow, and Nanking a danger zone from bombs, declaring that the only safe transit is by sea,. •which they control.

The contestants appear,, in the main, to be holding their original positions. The Japanese have intensified their air operations from an aerodrome established near the university and are paying special' attention to _ the civic centre and- the arsenal at Kiang' wan. ' Having paralysed Chinese shipping 'and banned night traffic ori the Canton River, the Japanese are expected next to assail the Canton-Hankow railway, the main north-to-south link.

A Japanese destroyer stopped the British steamer Fooshung off Amoy, examined her papers, and apologised.
