ART EXHIBITION

There were many interested members of the Suter'Art Society at the opening of the annual Rota Exhibition. This exhibition is becoming increasingly popular, and the varied types of art represented always attract. The president, Mr. J. S. Tennant, gave an address, and . musical items were delightfully rendered and much- appreciated. Among those present were Mr, and Mrs. J. S. Tennant, Dr. si-.ft JVlrs. H. E. A. Washbourn, Mr, di?s Mrs. C. R. Fell, Captain and Mrs. M. Moncrieff, Colonel H. C. H. Burton, Mrs. Jaques, Mr. and Mrs. A. Elliott, Mrs. J. Everett, Misses G. Bisley and M. Naylor. Many well-known Nelson artists are represented in the exhibition, and the following pictures caught the eye: "On the Road to Mount Cook" (Miss Enga Washbourn), "The Fifeshire Rock" (Miss M. Naylor), "A River Landscape" (Mr. A. Elliott), "North of Napier" (Mr. R. J. Waghorn), and "The Girls' College" (Mr. W. H. Allen).
Bright Reading:.
The Repertory Society's reading last week, "Bees on the Boat Deck" (by J. B. Priestley) was much appreciated. The parts were well cast by Mrs. J. B. Lemmer, who produced it.
The membership of this society is increasing and the readings are always well attended. All members are working hard to make a success of the play which will be produced in November by Mr. A. R. Kingsford.
Maitai Golf, Club.
In order to raise funds for the purpose of erecting a club house, the Maitai Golf Club gave a dance last week. This was very successful, and the result will help with the funds. Some of those who attended were Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Deighton, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Boyes.
Morning Tea.
A very pleasant tea was given recently by Mrs. R. A. Stedman. Among the guest were Mrs. E. B. Izard, Mrs. H. S. Robison, Mrs. E. Leggatt, Mrs, Williams, and Miss B. Moore.
Personal Items.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Lock have returned from the south, and will be in Nelson for a few days before going to the North Island.
Mrs. D. C. Low has returned to Nelson from Wellington.
Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Searle, who went tp Wellington for the football tournament, have returned to Nelson.
