TURF NEWS IN BRIEF
Acceptances for the first day of the Combined Hunts Meeting at New Plymouth next week are due at 9 o'clockAthis evening. ■■•■ The presence of Haughty Winner, Royal Chief, and The Crooner should assure a fine contest for next month s Wanganui Guineas., ■• Though entered for tomorrow s Underwood Stakes at Williamstown, Hua may be reserved for first start of the season in the A.J.C^Derby. The A.J.C. Derby favourite Ajax left Melbourne last week for Sydney_ to complete his preparation at Randwick. He was accompanied by The Chanter, Dark Sky, and Only One, other members of F. Musgrave's team. The Irish-bred Journey a End (Yutoi —Sweet Sounds), who was taken over to Melbourne a couple of years ago by the former Trentham trainer J. McLaughlin, .was recently sold privately to Mr. C. Pntchard, of Hobart. Scotsden, who is how a,member of F. Shaw's team at Wingatui, is an aged gelding by Guyver from Adaift; He finished third toKelly the Crow and Night Wind in the Christchurch Hunt Steeplechase recently,.and he is considered a prospect in the otago Hunt Cup Steeplechase tomorrow. Though Gay Mulla is to fulfil hurdling engagements at Wingatui shortly, it is some time since he was seen on the Trentham tracks or schooled. Hia trainer, W. J. Wood, seems to have the knack of fitting his charges without much track work. The Gascony gelding entered for the Combined Hunt Meeting at New Plymouth as Michael Patrick will race as Shangrl-Ha, the former name not having been available. Trained by H. Gray, he will carry the colours of the Hons. G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb. A patron of A. Jenkins's stable over the weekend purchased from Mrs. C. E. Twist the five-year-old Lucullus— Fairy Mark gelding Lucullus Lad, at a price said to be about 500 guineas. Some of the form of this gelding has been very promising. Solid support was forthcoming for Tuaheahe in the Harris Memorial Hack and Hunters' Hurdles at Ellers^ lie last Saturday, but he failed to flatter the hopes of his admirers at any stage. He jumped very carefully and was very slow to get away from his fences, a fault he will have to overcome before he is likely to achieve much success as a hurdler. Parakino, who has joined D. E. Cotton's team at Riccartdn, because of the transfer south of his owner, is by Kiosk, a smart Tea Tray sprinter from Colourline, who is by Nigger Minstrel from Civilisation, dam also of Civility, a fine performer in her day. Parakino has not done much racing, but he opened his winning account in a maiden event at Wanganui a few [■months ago.
