WOMEN'S HOCKEY

BUSY DAYS AHEAD

TOURNAMENT TRIALS

NOTES ON PLAYERS

(By "Circle")

The Wellington senior B and junior teams are to travel to Masterton to play representative games, this year, and it is expected that the matches will take place on August 28, that is, the day on-which the second senior' A team is expected to play at Otaki. Thus that day, will-be practically a closed day for women's hockey in Wellington, and no' competition games will be held here. ■ .■.,..'' ■/ ' .1.\.. • : ■■".■.;■ ■■■.■■:■. .'.:.•■■. Perhaps it should be suggested; that matches might be arrangedifor the intermediate and third grade, representatives on that day,: so as to. provide something of interest for all women hockey players. It might be possible :to arrange matches for players in these grades at either Masterton or Otaki, in which case, by travelling with the senior representatives, they could make the .trip'at less expense. It would be to the advantage of the lower, grade teams if some of their players could get a representative match occasionally, as it would give them an idea, of what to.expect when they meet outside teams in higher grades. These are the players who will: provide our senior A and senior B teams in future years, and all the experience which they can gain in: the lower grades will be invaluable later on. . . : . The Trial Matches. The trial matches last Saturday were rather disappointing by, reason of the lack of . combination shown by the senior A teams, but they did have the effect of giving the selector some idea as ■to how the various players would shape under unfavourable conditions. Many players- showed up well, but some others gave disappointing 'performances.

Perhaps the best performance of the day was given by MissM. Corby, the Training College captain, playing centre forward for the A team. She gave a spirited display, playing fine hockey on a slippery ground, and keeping up the pace until the final whistle

Miss E. Cheyne (C.0.G.), goalkeeper for the Possibles, made one bad slip when she let a soft shot from Miss M. Gunson (Poneke) get past her, but re-

deemed this mistake by some fine saves later on in the game. Miss Gunson showed plenty of speed on occasions, but it appeared as if she, did not have sufficient grip on her shoes for the slippery ground.

Miss E. Mclndoe was a strong defender for the A team, and Mrs., A. ■ Smith, for the Possibles, was another player who was hard to get past. A surprisingly good display was given by Miss M. Black, playing at right inner for the As. She played a solid type of game which was particularly suited to the conditions. Miss Janet Mack (T.0.G.1). right inner for the same team, started off very well, but had lapses from form occasionally, playing with one hand rather much. The failure of the forward line to combine successfully was disappointing, although this might have been expected when players were required to play together for the first time. The absence of Miss J. Riley was to ,be regretted, as She wo .Id probably have put up a good showing. Hockey in the Schools. It is understood that the question of girls' hockey being introduced into some of the Wellington schools is receiving favourable • consideration in some quarters, and next season should see several school teams apart from the Technical teams already in existence. Postponement of Games. In view of the Test match against the Springboks, to be played at Wellington on August 14, the Wellington Women's Hockey Association has decided to postpone all its games on that date. '. However, games will not be postponed on August 7, the date of the Wellington match. Assisting Travellers. To help in the expenses, of any of their club members chosen to represent Wellington at the Dominion tournament next month, the College Old Girls' Hockey Club is holding a card evening at Mrs. Walker's residence, Newtown, on Wednesday next. Commencement of Tournament. If the entries for the New Zealand tournament are not up to standard this season it is possible that the games will commence on the Monday, August 30. It is usually the practice to see; that the games end on a Saturday, so that if the entries are not sufficient to last over seven days a start is made later in the week. Championship Points.
