BURNS CLUB CONCERT
A very large audience was present at the concert held by the Wellington Burns Club on Monday evening. The hall was tastefully decorated, and the Union Jack and Scots standard decked the walls. The president, Mr. R. H. Nimmo, assisted by the vice-patron, Mr. D. McLaren, led the meeting. Miss Dorothy Spinks acted as accompanist on the piano. Mr. Charles Williams (tenor) sang "A Lowland Lament," "Jessie, the Flower of Dumblane," "A Churning Lilt." Miss Kythe Macivor rendered Burns's songs, "Ac Fond Kiss," '"A Bonnie Wee Thing," and "Turn Ye to Me." Mr. W. Marshall sang "My Am Folk," "Wandering the King's Highway," and "A Hundred Pipers and A' and A." The company sang most heartily "Land of Hope and Glory" (Mr. Marshall rendering the verse). Mrs. Pengelly sang very i sweetly "My Own Countree," "Home is Calling,'" "On Rowan Tree." Mr. D. McLaren recited "The Thistle and the Rose." An interesting and informative short address was given by Miss Sutherland, B.Sc. (For.), on "The Forests of Royal Deeside." This address described the home district of Queen Elizabeth and its relations with Scots monarchy. During the evening reference was made to King George V and his wOnderful service to the Empire, and an appeal was made for personal contributions to the King George V Memorial Fund. Mr. McLaren gave a short patriotic address hailing the crowning of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and pledging the fealty of Scots to the Throne. Supper was provided by the ladies' committee. Votes of thanks were passed to the artists and committee. "God Save the King" and "Auld Lang Syne" were sung with great enthusiasm, this concluding a most hearty gathering.
