CHANCE ACCEPTED

CATALOGUE'S NARROW WIN

Catalogße, though his appearance would not suggest that it has been possible to do a great deal-of recent work with him, seized' the opportunity he was afforded with-his lenient weight in the Silverstream Hack Handicap. It was all he could do to last out the mile, but he Rot to the post a very tired horse still a good head in front of Reipar. Reipar went to the front early and set the pace. Near the half-mile Catalogue joined him on his inner,- but then the leader dashed away again and was three lengths in front rounding the home turn. Catalogue went up along the rail with a short dash after entering the straight and was drawing right away nearing the distance, but his condition then began to tell and he was stopping very quickly as they reached the post. As a three-year-old Catalogue gave great promise, whining in open handicap class and finishing second in the Great Northern Derby, but after that he proved very difficult to keep right. Barnes, of Palmerston North, one of the partners who formerly raced him. * ' i

When Catalogue ran past him he sat down to earnest work, and the result was his failure to get.back only by a narrow margin.

Lady Siegfried came from the rear to be an easy third, and she is a consistent mare deserving of early success. She is the type of stayer who. might be in the running if started in the champion hack event tomorrow.

Stratosphere may improve on his fourth at the meeting. Roaming was a disappointing favourite, for he was first out but neither was able to hold his place" nor make any impression in the run home. Perhaps the going did not suit him. Sea Wrack stuck out the mile really well and looked a place prospect, half-way down the straight. Rousseau was never in the issue, and Lucullus Lad dropped out in the straight-
