TWO RIDES, TWO WINS

P. Burgess had a hundred per cent, riding return at Trentham yesterday, as he won on his only two mounts, Laggard and Gay Hunter. He was also to have ridden Myriam, another winner, but he could not get down to the weight and he allowed W. J. Broughton to take that mount.

down Old Surrey's resistance to go on to a length victory.

Gay Hunter has had a lot of racing, mainly on the East Coast, and he has been a very consistent performer. This win takes him out of hack class. He is a three-year-old bay colt out of the Autumn—Serbia mare Fall o' the Year, a winner herself and a halfsister to the useful Carniola,' and he is owned by his breeder, Mr. H. K. Swan, of Gisborne, who for a time successfully raced Malahat. Twelve months ago the colt made a trip down to Tauherenikau at Easter, when he recorded his only two-year-old win, but he.-was only once unplaced in seven starts last season and his record has been- similarly consistent this season. . ' ■

Old Surrey ran up to his best form, and with a stronger rider in the battling finish he might have prevailed. He hung on resolutely and fought back s till near the post after having been required to do it all the way, in pursuit of The Bigot early. He. has the makings of a good performer.

Imposture was third practically throughout and she was a comfortable third at the close. Like Gay Hunter and Old Surrey, she is also a three-year-old. Sanhedrim came along wide out in the straight but never looked like bridging the gap. • For once the inner route was proving the better yesterday, despite the conditions, but the track was standing up to the racing better than might have been anticipated. Earl Colossus, after not beginning too well, was right up fifth. Sunny Blonde ran usefully to the straight, but The Bigot faded right out and finished last. Alunga, a -surprise favourite, did not appear able to handle the going, for he was never doing it right at any stage.
