Sir, —Like many others, "Diogenes" is loud in his praises of Mr. Semple in his administration of the Public Works Department. lam a bit tired of hearing general statements. Let us get down to tin-tacks. Suppose that "Diogenes" asks the Minister to give the public a few guaranteed figures of the cost per cubic yard of shifting rock and or clay; consideration to be given to the wear and tear and depreciation on the very expensive labour-saving machinery. Then let us have the costs of works done by the late Government before the slump when men were on full wages, and compare these with present d.ay costs. —I am, etc.,
