A BIG PROGRAMME
WAIRARAPA HOSPITALS
MEETING AN URGENT NEED
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
MASTERTON, This Day
The attitude of the Wairarapa Hospital Board towards the major portion of its building programme underwent a complete change at yesterday's meeting, when the proposals were drastically overhauled. Realising the urgent need for the provision of increased accommodation for patients and nurses, the board decided to proceed with works estimated to cost £46,000. All but £1700 of that sum is to be raised by way of loan. The policy of the board regarding its capital works in recent months drew a strong protest from Mr. D. McGregor, who remarked: "This is the most extraordinary local body I have ever been on."
Works in progress or in prospect at Master-ton and Greytown are now estimated to cost the board about £32,714.
After some discussion, it was decided to erect a three-storey ward block for patients instead of a two-storey one at a total estimated cost of £40,062. The three-storey block would provide an additional 60 hospital beds, which was considered would be sufficient for six or seven years. It was also agreed to build a third storey on to the nurses' home at an estimated cost of £6632 and making provision for 24 additional nurses' beds, and to build a temporary ward for children at an estimated cast of £1700.
