GOVERNMENT'S WORK
COMMERCIAL VIEW
TAXATION BURDEN
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day,
In a critical review of the Government's legislation, Mr. A. A. Ross, retiring president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, said in his annual address that the placing of the main highways under unified control was a desirable change. He commended the efforts to make the roads safe.r for the public. Regarding local government, Mr. Ross expressed the hope that tangible results would be obtained from the efforts for reform. Referring to taxation, he said New Zealand was now one of the most highly taxed countries in the world, and it would have been wiser if the Government-had maintained the taxation scales unchanged and allowed recovery to produce more revenue. The abolition of the Railways Board was a great mistake. He predicted a relapse in railways finance. In the dairy industry the changes had been in the direction of taking control out of the hands of the producers. He considered the effects would be detrimental. Referring to the Reserve Bank, Mr. Ross said continuous vigilance would be needed.
