KILBIRNIE'S DAY

Many members and their friends attended the official opening of the season for the Kilbirnie Cricket Club at the Kilbirnie Recreation Ground on Saturday. Play, however, was confined to a sixteen-a-side match, in which each player batted for ten minutes. S. "Ward found his feet quickly, and made 22. Mr. William King, the president, paid a tribute to the staff of the City Council, which had put the wickets in excellent order. He congratulated the club on retaining Mr. G. Rotherham as coach, and considered that it would be of general benefit to the game in Wellington. ' , Mr. W. J. Gaudin, patron of the club, in declaring the season open, said that the Kilbirnie Club was among the veterans of Wellington Club cricket, and that a good season was anticipated. Much of the success of the club in the past season had been due to the leadership of Mr. J. Reid, club captain, and Mr. King. One of the high-lights of this season was the

formation of a Kilbirnie Ladies' Club,, and he wished the members every success.

Mr. Reid and Mr. J. H. Phillipps, chairman of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association, also spoke. Prominent among the new members of the club this season are B. Broit, a former member of the Central Cumberland Club, Parramattta, New South Wales, who will probably be the senior wicketkeeper this season, and G. L. Rowe, a former member of the Kiwi Club, Blenheim, and an ex-Marl-borough representative. The Rev. E. O. Blamires, who was with the Hutt Club last season, will also play for Kilbirnie.
