A NEW AMBULANCE
POWER AND COMFORT
The Wellington District Free Ambulance has just taken delivery of a new ambulance of the latest type, and it will be put in commission shortly.
The car, which is of American design, has a 30 horse-power engine, and a special chassis. It has a stream-lined body which combines an impression of grace and speed with large carrying capacity. It is painted the customary cream colour of the, district ambulances.
The car has several new features and improvements on those at present in use. The most noticeable of these is an'illuminated white maltese cross on a red ground, mounted in a circular opening above the windscreen. Coupled with the distinctive electric bell which is being fitted, this should give traffic ample warning to make way. The step at the back folds in flush with the body, arid the back doors are fitted with quadrants which hold them securely open and allow them fo be shut with ease. A single rotary lock secures both rear doors, which are fitted with dustproof shutters.
I»rovision is made for three stretcher cases. Thick sponge-rubber cushions cover the seat, and thinner spongerubber cushions are used in place of the usual and less hygienic kapok in the mattresses and side cushions. Sliding glass panels are fitted between the driver and the ambulance compartment. A canopy light and a special ventilator complete the interior innovations.
