OBITUARY

REV. FATHER J. HERRING

, A message was received yesterday evening from Sydney notifying the sudden death of the Rev. Father Joseph Herring. S.M. It appears that the deceased collapsed when attending the Eucharistic procession at St. Patrick's College, Manly, and died shortly afterwards. .

Father Herring was well known in Wellington as he was stationed for some time at St. Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street. Prior to going to Sydney, where he was a parish priest of Hunter's Hill, he was for several years in charge of the parish of Whangarei. A man of exceptionally strong physique, his death has come as a great shock to all who knew him. His bright, genial disposition and untiring energy made him deservedly popular in the parishes where he laboured. He is survived by two brothers, the Rev. Father A. T. Herring, S.M., of the Marist Mission House, Brisbane, and Mr, F. Herring, of Wellington, and two sisters, Mrs. M. J. Kennedy, Island Ifcly, and Sister Mary Evangelist, of the Convent of Mercy, Aro Street. Father Herring was born in Tasmania, came to New Zealand at an early age, and was educated at St. Patrick's College, Wellington, and St. Mary's Seminary, Greenmeadows. A Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Angels on Wednesday morning, at 9 a.m. [ MR. 0. D. O'MAHONEY News has been received in Wellington of the death at. Perth, Western Australia, of Mr. , O'Connell D. O'Mahoney, national president of the directory of the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society. He was elected president in 1935. Apart from his activities as president of the Hibernian Society, Mr. O'Mahoney took an active part in philanthropic work, and the decoration of Leo's Cross was conferred upon him by his Holiness the t Pope.
