PETER JACKSON IMPROVES

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

WANGANUI, This Day.

| Although the local contingent for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting is not a large one, a couple of gallops on Saturday morning proved of interest, Midian and Peter Jackson being sent five furlongs, and Tupeotu and Sanhedrin slipping oyer a half-mile. The tracks are in splendid winter order and the going was good in spite of the heavy frost, which was just thawing out under a chilly wind.

On the outside of the course proper, Midian and Peter Jackson (the latter without shoes) were together over the initial stages of their task, but Peter Jackson then drew clear to finish well in front, registering lmin 5 2-ssec for the distance and taking 52 3-ssec for the last half-mile. Midian was hitting out well, and under the circumstances his display was not so disappointing as might have been thought after seeing a margin of several lengths separating him from Peter Jackson.

Sanhedrin and Tupeotu staged their gallop on No. 1 track, the firstnamed jumping away smartly in front and finishing a couple of lengths ahead in 53sec. Sanhedrin is Mr. F. Bristol's Chief Ruler—Bent gelding and is engaged in the Borough Hack Handicap, in which he will be ridden by the promising apprentice Edwards. Tupeotu will be ridden in the Wanganui Brace- j let by Mr. Lan Higgie.

Steady Work was done by Spiral (W. Rayner), and by the pair of rising two-year-olds, Scarf Dance and Icing, in Rayner's stable. They brushed up. the straight a couple of times and appeared to relish the chance to stretch out. The juveniles, together with W. H. Dwyer's unnamed half-sister to Birthday Party, may be permitted to have a run up the straight prior to the first race next Saturday.

At Fordell the tracks have been rather heavy of late and this has prevented D. Marks from giving his Wanganui candidates, Farmer, Mother Superior, and Waipiro, as much work as he would have liked. In addition, Farmer has been suffering from a recurrence of the leg trouble that affected him at Bulls, and which came on him again after Marton. He has not won a race since scoring in the Winter Oats twelve months ago.
