DIAMOND AND SWIFTS

Diamond played Swifts on No. 2 ground of the Basin Reserve before very few spectators. Considering the slippery turf, ball control and combination were remarkably good. The Diamond players adapted themselves to the conditions much better than their opponents. The teams lined up:— Diamond.—Bentley; Hopper, Cockburn; Nicol. Geddes, Upchurch; Tucker, Eussell, Baker, Dyer, B. Johnston. Swifts.—Wickliffe; Dickson, Oliver; P. MacGregor, White, C. MacGregor; Whyte, Heath, Lamb, Adams, Hawken. Referee.—Mr. R. Inch. Swifts kicked off with the wind behind them. Play fluctuated for the first ten minutes. After Bentley had made a neat save, play was transferred to the Swifts goal where a mix-up occurred* from which Baker scored. A good movement by Whyte and Heath paved the way for Lamb to equalise. Hesitation by Lamb deprived Swifts of a goal, and incidentally paved the way for Diamond's second goal, Johnston going straight through to beat Wickliffe. An interesting and even sjiell ended with the Score Diamond 2, Swifts 1. Diamond took charge of the game in the second half, and notwithstanding the greasy, heavy ball and slippery turf, several good moves were executed by them. After ten minutes of this spell had gone, Diamond increased their lead, Oliver deflecting a shot by Tucker into the net. Then Russell beat Wickliffe with a soft one. and Dyer took advantage of a partial* save to score Diamond's fifth goal. Russell and Dyer added one more each to Diamond's score. The last ten minutes of the game was Wickliffe versus Diamond. Diamond were definitely the better team even though the final score somewhat flattered them. The game ended: Diamond 7, Swifts 1.
