FIRST IN OPEN COMPANY

Dungarvan marked his ascent to open company with an attractive victory in thePahiatua-Cup. Always well up in the running, he was almost on terms with Speed following Red Kufus as they landed in the straight, and although Speed raced to the van at the distance he -made light of the task when asked of drawing up to the leader and then going on to a short length win -over the strongly-finishing Pladie. After- assuming charge he was easily ridden, so the victory had more merit in it than the margin showed. : A trophy of a canteen of cutlery was attached 1o the race, and it was presented : afterwards by the president (Mr.'--D. Kelly) to the owner of the winner, Mr. J..C. Kennedy, of Dannevirke. ' .The trainer, W. Pine, also received a trophy, a set of fish knives and forks. •-Dungarvan is one of the hack finds

of the season, and he now promises to go a long way in open company. _He had his first race only on Boxing Day last, and in the three months he has been racing he has won five times in ten starts. He is a^ big, . powerful three-year-old son of Colossus and the Demosthenes—Sylvan Maid mare Tikima, looking all over the part he seems destined to play if all goes well with him in the future. , ; Pladie, who is racing very solidly again, continues to be unlucky an just missing the main prize. 'He came home resolutely after, being fourth into the,straight; but never, had any chance against the winner. Speed was second nearly all the way, but the last piece found him wanting and he was beaten by half a length out of a dividend. At a shade shorter distance he should ,soon enjoy another winning turn, for he looks muscular and-fit. Red Rufus, three lengths clear along the back, weakened into a poor fourth. Round Score, after racing outside Pladie to the straight, did not respond when the whips were out. Arikira had one ol his mulish turns and chased the field a furlong in the rear..
