BURGESS'S SECOND WIN
The Trentham horseman P; Burgess rode his second winner.in succession when he brought Geitel home a much mdre comfortable victor of the Ballance Highweight Handicap than the half-length margin at the post would indicate. Geitel, <after< being fifth early, had improved to third at the straight behind Earl Colossus and Bacchus Marsh, Bacchus Marsh went Syide, forcing Geitel.out on the track too, and Contract dashed through to take the lead before the distance; but Geitel, after running in and delaying her-challenge till on the final halffurlong; quickly overpowered the leader. ■
It was Geitel's5 second win in four starts. in the Dominion, but she was once successful in Australia before being brought over >by her ownertrainer, H. B. Lbrigan, last December. She is a four-year-old brown mare by Blankney II from the Cyklon mare Soa's Daughter, and it is said that, her name-is Yiddish for Gertrude. She is a long-striding type of galloper, something.after the stamp of Fast Passage, and perhaps she will reveal good staying qualities as she-is tried over longer distances, which it is the intention of her'owner to. do.
Contract surprised .by his showing, but he" was recently.. tackling shorter distances at Trentham. He moved up quickly before, the straight and then burst through to the front, but he was finally no match for the winner, though he stuck on well. He was having his first, race in the colours of the ClareyUle trainer G.'Neich, who took'him over:on lease'after the Wellington Meeting. Blue Tiger was second last most of the way, but finished on solidly just to gain third money two lengths behind Contract. Earl-Colossus, after going out to a break of two lengths at tho six furlongs, died into fourth place. Bacdhus Marsh and Tiger Bill (who went put very wide in the straight) were next after a gap. Hoyal Papa went poorly, again.' After .the race an inquiry was called into interference alleged to have been ■caused by Geitel's running in on Bacchus "Marsh half-way down the straight. The judicial committee found that there had.been interference, but exonerated BurgesS from blame.' It was probably because he had to straighten up his mount that Burgess delayed his final claim till so late.
