In 1895, when it was won by H. Goodman s Casket, the distance was reduced to 1J miles and 123 yards. Four years later, when E. Cutts's pjin Djin was successful! the' journey 'was shortened to 1J miles, a distance at which it still stands. Sixteen three-year-olds have won the Cup, the record for weight carried by horses of this age being held by Silver Scorn, who was successful under 9.2 in 1933. Last year's winner, Tauramai, was also a three-year-old. Three-year-olds engaged in this year's race are Kinnoull, Greek Shepherd, and Superex. Osculate is the only horse placed in last year's Cup who will be starting this year. He carried 7.8 when second twelve months ago and he has 8.8 on Thursday. - Mary Pratt is regarded as a likely non-starter in the President's Handicap but The Surgeon, who now has 9 o,'will probably take on this race in preference to the Stewards' Handicap.
