RUGBY FOOTBALL
WELLINGTON UNION
A deputation from the Berhampore Football Club asked the Wellington Rugby Union's management committee last night if it would raise any objection to the club's name being changed to that of Pirates. The committee indicated that it had no objection to the change, but consideration of the question of the club's position in regard to gymnasium finance, which was also mentioned by the deputation, was deferred pending further information from the club.
A decision was made that the annual meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union be held on March 18.
A report was made to the effect that the City Council had given an assurance to a deputation that V->o represen: tations made regarding the taking of part of the Lyall Bay playing areas for enlarging the Rongotai Aerodrome would receive consideration. The Mercantile Cricket League and the Wellington Boys' Cricket Association notified that they had supported the protest regarding the possible loss of playing space.
A copy of the Waikato Rugby Union's appeal to the New Zealand Rugby Union that there should be no renewal of broadcasting contracts until representatives of all unions had had an opportunity of discussing the matter was received. It was indicated in the communication that broadcasting of football matches was affecting the financial position of country unions.
