POST OFFICE CLOCK

A THOROUGH OVERHAUL

DAMAGED BY WEATHER

For several weeks Wellington people have been unable to set their watches by the big clock on the Featherston Street side of the Central Post Office. It has not been there, and, indeed, is still missing. When an object so well known as this clock is removed inquiries are naturally provoked, and there have been many '• people who have telephoned and written asking questions. They have wanted to know what has happened to the' clock, when it is to be reinstated, and others have gone further and have commented on the time the clock has been down.

The explanation for the removal of the clock is that it Was damaged by bad weather, not the recent weekend,' storm, but by conditions which prevailed before the death of King George. The face was damaged, and also some of the mechanism. With the announcement of the death of King George the clock was draped, and subsequently was taken down for repairs. This is the first time, a "Post" reporter was informed today, that the clock has been removed for 25 years.

Having done faithful service for so long, the clock had earned an overhaul, and gear in connection with the erection of an additional storey on the Post Office being available, the opportunity was taken of removing the clock to give it a thorough reconditioning. Naturally, such work cannot be done in a few days, but it is now nearing completion, and it is expected that the clock will be ready for hoisting into position on the' brackets overhanging Featherston Street some time this week. :
