AMATEUR ATHLETICS
ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Wellington provincial amateur athletic championships, to be held at the Basin Reserve next Saturday, are arousing keen interest. The meeting promises to be one of the best for several years, and if the conditions are favourable some excellent performances should be registered. There is some really first-class talent in Wellington this year, particularly in the sprints, middle distances, and hurdles. W. J. Fitzsimmons, the present sprint champion, is in great form, but he will be fully extended by Stephenson, Robinson, Walker, J. T. Phillips, and others.
Amongst the distance men will be E. Forne.New Zealand mile champion, W. Ogg, Rafter, Wyeth (Wairarapa), and A. R. Wilson. Wilson, a likely winner of the national mile title, has been running splendidly, and he should record very fast time in his particular event. He will also probably start in the three miles.
The hurdlers are especially good. P. Bowie is the present holder of the New Zealand 120 yards title, G. McGregor if an ex-champion, and J. McDonald, the New Zealand University champion. These three men should provide an exciting contest. The field events have drawn several notable performers in Munro, Crowe, Adlurrv the Roberts brothers from the Wairarapa, Moore (Nelson), and F. Brady, a former New Zealand high jump and pole vault champion. The meeting is to commence at midday, and at 2 p.m. there will be a grand parade of athletes, following which the principal events will be staged. . ■ .. ■
