STAFF PICNIC

NATIONAL PROVIDENT

The National Provident and Friendly Societies Department's annual picnic was held at Day's Bay on Monday. The Minister in charge (the Hon. W. Lee Martin), Mrs. Lee Martin, Mr. R. M Porteous (Deputy Superintendent), Mrs. Porteous, and Mr. G. E. Bradley (Deputy Registrar) were among those (present. Over the luncheon table the Deputy Superintendent, on behalf of the staff, welcomed Mr. Lee Martin, who, in replying, said that he was very glad of the opportunity of meeting {he Department under such congenial circumstances. The Deputy Registrar spoke briefly on behalf of the Friendly Societies section of the Department, and called for cheers for the. Minister.

A sports programme was held in the morning, and canoe races and tennis in the afternoon. Results were as follows:—Men's handicap, 100 yards: Mr. Taylor, 1; Mr. Crawford, 2. Ladies' scamper, 75 yards: Miss Stoweres, 1; Miss McAlpine, 2. Darwinian: Mr. Richardson. Three-legged race: Miss Burns and Mr. Ross. Whistling race: Miss McAlpine and Mr. Familton. Shoe race: Miss Burns and Mr. Gainey. Cigarette race: Miss Anderson and Mr. Carruthers. Inter-sectional relay: Superannuation Office. Canoe race: Men's singles, Mr. Richardson 1, Mr. Carruthers 2; ladies' singles, Miss Anderson 1, Miss Short 3. Mrs. Pnrtonns oresented the prizei.
