SCOPE FOR THE ATHLETE
"Sports Championships as Careers" may soon be the watchword of anxious parents who are thinking of the futures of their daughters, states the
"Queen." Miss K. Stammers, who has been bracketed No. 1 with Miss Dorothy Round by the Lawn Tennis Association in the official rankings for the past season, is the latest great exponent of lawn tennis to embark on a business career. Miss Stammers is joining, the sports outfit designing section of a big store, where she will meet another champion, Mrs. Fearnley Whittingstall, who has been employed there for some time. Miss Dorothy Round also holds a similar appointment in another store. This fashion, of course, was set by Miss Joyce Weathered when she joined a 'rm in an advisory capacity.
Mr. Dan Sheridan, of Ignatius Road, Dublin, was eating his lunch in a yard where he is employed. The wind blew a scrap 'of old newspaper into his lap. It contained an announcement, of his brother's death in an aeroplane crash in France 17 years ago.
An anonymous letter has been received by Ihe Eastbourne Borough Council authorities protesting against the practice some passengers in the ferry steamers have of smoking in the non-smoking compartments. The council issues a warning against offenders and will take action where the rules arc not carried out.
