STEAMER FREIGHTS

(To the Editor.)

Sir—ls it not time some move was made in the Capital City to effect a reduction in the freight charged for the transport of motor-cars to Lyttelton and vice versa, especially during the holiday season. I believe there are thousands of North Island motorists who would be delighted to visit the South Island, on a camping tour, if the freight charges were reduced considerably. The Lakes of the South Island are unknown personally to thousands in the North Island, whereas we should endeavour to have New Zealanders know New Zealand. There must be thousands of South Island motorists who would gladly tour the North Island if the freight on the car waslower. At present one cati tour the North Island for the price of the freight to and fro between Wellington and Lyttelton.—l am,. etc.,' . EQUITY. [The steamer freights on motor-cars between Wellington and Lyttelton and Wellington and Picton bear favourable comparison between those on similar services at Home, "The Post" is informed. For instance, the rates on a well-known make of British cars by cross-Channel passenger steamers, between Dover and Calais, between Folkestone and Boulogne, between Newhaven and Dieppe, between Southampton and Le-Havre, and between Southampton and St. Malo are as follows, with the rates between Wellington and Lyttelton and Wellington and Picton set against them:— Dover- Wei- WelCalais, llngton- lingtoiiCar. etc. Lyttelton. Picton. £ s. d. £ s. d. £ s. d.
