RIO DE JANEIRO, November 26.
Government reports indicate that the revolutionary movement in the northern States has been checked.
Nevertheless the President, Dr. Vargas, has declared a sixty days' period of martial law and has mobilised the nation's entire military and naval strength to suppress the uprising, which is centred in the cities of Pernambuco and Natal, wherein each case regiments revolted and defied the loyal forces of the Government.
A cable published yesterday -stated that the Brazilian Government >.had mobilised the armed forces to attack revolutionaries who were leading a formidable movement against the Government in the north-eastern States of Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, Pernambuco, and Parahyba. According to private reports, partially confirmed by the Government, the revolution is Communistic' in nature. Government reports indicate that soldiers of the 21st Battalion of Chasseurs stationed at Natal revolted and imprisoned their officers and took possession of the city. A battalion at Pernambuco attempted a similar coup, but was defeated by loyal troops.
