WORK TO BE REFUSED
NEW AWARD OBJECTED TO
SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE
SEAMEN
SYDNEY, November 26.
Seamen of the Sydney and Melbourne branches decided to refuse work under the new Arbitration Court award of Judge Dethbridge which come into operation on December 1. This means that working seamen will be withdrawn automatically from vessels as they reach home ports after that date. Another maritime unheaval is thus threatened.
The committee of management of the Sydney seamen's branch urged that no action should be taken until the result of a plebiscite concerning acceptance of the award became known, but this proposal was rejected by a large majority.
It is understood that Melbourne seamen favour a general strike unless the award is varied to meet their objections. Branches in other States are being urged to reject the award.
The seamen's objections include the loss of threepence an hour overtime, the failure of the Court to provide a differential rate for the rigging of gear for loading and unloading, and the loss of "clocking" time for deferred sailing.
