OUTSTANDING ATHLETE

EX-ST. PATRICK'S COLLEGE

STUDENT

Some outstanding performances were recorded by N. S. Welsh, aa exSt. Patrick's College student, at the annual Otago-Southland secondary schools' sports held at Rugby Park, Invercargill, last Saturday. Representing St. Kevin's College, Oamaru, Welsh not only won the four events, the 100, 220, and 440 yards and the high jump in the junior championship for which he entered, but, as the sole representative of his school in the junior section, succeeded in winning this division for his college. In addition he broke-the quarter-mile record in.his heat by running the distance in 60 seconds, knocked two-fifths of a second from the existing 220 yards' time, 26 l-ssec, and equalled the 100 yards record of 11 l-ssec. He won the high jump with a leap of 4ft 9in. It was a magnificent afternoon's work on the part of Welsh, who outclassed his opponents in the running events. It will be recalled that this lad, who is a son of Mr. W. Welsh, of the Treasury Department, Wellington, showed exceptional promise last year, when he won the 100 yards championship under 14 af the Wellington intercollege meeting in the record time of 11 4-ssec. His future progress will be watched with keen interest.
