ATHLETIC COUNCIL
TWO DELEGATES RESIGNING
A CENTRE'S INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions received by them from the Auckland Centre have led Messrs. L. A. Tracy and W. F. Ingram to decide to resign from the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association as the representatives of that centre. They were instructed by the Auckland Centre to nominate and support Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, of Auckland, as the preident of the N.Z.A.A.A. The president at the present time is Mr. R. W. McVilly, one of the Wellington Centre's delegates, who has held the position for some years. Mr. Kalaugher has been the president of the Auckland Centre.
When paying tribute to the leadership of Mr. McVilly at the final meeting of the council before the annual meeting of the association, Mr. Tracy said he had talked the matter over with Mr. Ingram, who entirely agreed with his attitude, with the result that both of them were going to resign. Furthermore, neither of them would accept renomination to the council without the other.
In endorsing Mr. Tracy's remarks, Mr. Ingram said the position was that both of them were either on or off the council.
Mr. Tracy has written to the Auckland Centre, stating that he does not think delegates should be a mere voting machine, but that they should, be allowed to weigh up the pros and cons of any matters submitted to the meeting. He added that if the centre did not agree with his views he regretted it, and would be glad to hear whether the centre desired that he should resign.
On Tuesday morning Mr. Tracy received a night-letter telegram, which stated that while agreeing with the general principle of not tying the hands of the delegates, the centre still insisted on his nominating and supporting Mr. Kalaugher as president.
Mr. Tracy has given long service to the association both as a delegate on the council, and, more particularly, as the secretary of the association, which position he relinquished this year for business reasons. With the exception of one year he has represented the Auckland Centre on the council since 1925.
