IMPORTED GOODS

RECIPROCITY WITH JAPAN

MANUFACTURERS' ATTITUDE

A considerable part of the discussion at the meeting of the general committee of the Wellington Manufacturers' Association last night concerned remits which are to be considered at the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation, to be held in Wellington on November 21 and 22. One of these, remits, sent forward by the Dunedin Association, suggested that the federation should approach the Government and urge that the importation of Japanese goods should be restricted.

The Wellington Association decided that it would not be in the best interests of the Domi lion that such action should be urged on the Government, for though manufacturers were as anxious as anyone that the importation of manufactured goods should be restricted, it had to be recognised that reciprocal trade is essential in the wider interests of the country and national welfare.

Reference was made by speakers to the very large purchases of New Zealand's raw materials by Japan, and their opinion that manufacturers would not be justified in going to the Government, as suggested in the Dunedin remit, was endorsed.
