CALSHOT'S XEXT RACE

FORM NOTES FROM NORTH

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, November 4.

In view of the fact that he was thought good enough to take down to Trentham for an engagement on Labour Day, Calshot should be favourite for the hack sprints at Te Rapa if he is produced next week.

Fersen has been entered for the handicap events at Te -Rapa, but that may be only a safety move, for he will probably go to Riccarton, unless plans •are changed. He could still race at the New Zealand Cup Meeting on the first two days and then be shipped north, with three days at Te Kapa oefore racing again, but such rushing and travelling have seen many good horses beaten in the past. Teddy Boy ran a great race in his outing on the second day of the Auckland Meeting, and his close fourth might have been something, better had he not been pinched for room when he made his move on the rails. This gelded son of Maori Boy is due to make his next appearance at Whangarei, where the class is not likely to be up to Ellerslie standard, so it is going to take a good one to down this hack; there.

There is going, to be a mild invasion of the Auckland.Province this month, for included in- the Waikato entries- are no lass than 25 horses from outside the province, the strongest representation from the south ever recorded at this centre.-. It is probf^ 16-,,^-^ all thes.e Will go on after the Waikato Meeting and race at the Bay of Islands fixture at Pukekohe the following Saturday, and at the Takapuna Meeting at Ellerslie at the end of the month. So many visitors will add interest to these gatherings. Taranaki is sending a particularly strong team on this trip, and there are several also coming from the East Coast centres. The possible contingent comprises Aga Khan, Sporting Song, Tahurangi, Fersen, Gold Mission, Refresher Lady Kyra, Good Hunting, bunny Maid, Supreme Court. Seamond Panloff, Invictus, Nigger Rill. Albv, Gigantic. Wahine Nui, Small Boy, Lady Eka, Kilberis, Bantry, Headmistress, Ruri, Larwood, Gay Chief and Golden Blonde. This list of names indicates the drawing power of a good programme.

While a couple of smart sprinters in Btmghal and British Columbia were at the head of the weights in the six furlongs on the opening day of the Whangarei Meeting, and only ,one horse outside this pair was handicapped above the minimum, it is possible that some of those at the bottom would make it .very interesting. at the liberal concession in poundage. Among the dangerous candidates are Bellkynan and Ballymoney, both of'whom may be seen out in this class on Thursday or Saturday next. „ Travelling Agent was entered for the hurdle race at Paeroa a month ago, but he did not run at the fixture. However, ,if he was forward enough then to be included in the entries it speaks well for his chances at the Waikato fixture next week, where the class ,in events over the sticks is not going to be over strong, even if there are plenty of Competitors. Travellin" Agent was in the boom last winter and only an injury • prevented' him from racing at Trentham and Riccarton. -,-..-.. : \.. ■ ■ An interesting runner in the hurdle races at • Whangarei this week will be Tea Chat, the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes winner of five years ago. In his few outings over the sticks to date he has displayed all his speed but has not shown a liking for the jumping part of it, although he may improve on acquaintance. The hurdle races at the northern- fixture are not going to be difficult to win,'and unless Tea Chat takes it into his. head to stop dead at a fence^-as he did on one occasion at Ellerslie—then he may spring a mild surprise. ■ , . Tidalia, the three-year-old half-sis-ter by Tidal to King March and Gay Marigold, may have her first real winning chance in the maiden events at the Whangarei Meeting this week for the opposition is not even so strong as in the past and her recent form has been better than that of the others engaged. In the hack mile on the second day of the Auckland Spring Meeting she showed a lot of pace to run up second at the end of three furlongs, after starting wide out. and she was still there at the home turn. It was not surprising to notice her fading out in the straight, but her effort indicated that she should soon be out of the maiden class.

Two horses returning to racing at Te Rapa after a long absence are Beryl Latour and Prince of Orange. The former has raced on most courses in the North Island and has been placed to advantage, although she never gave any indication of being a good galloper. Prince of Orange was a good jumper who lost form well before he was spelled, but if he gets back to form he will be a force to be reckoned with over the sticks. There are four good hurdle races to be won at the Auckland Summer Meeting and that has doubtless been responsible for the return of Prince of Orange to the fold. ■
