TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

The New Zealand Cup Meeting open-; at Riccarton on Saturday, and.it will be concluded the following Saturday The Corry horses, who are to be sold m Victoria this week were winning, well in the Dominion up till the tvn ,v of their departure for Australia. lhe well-known jumping rider R. Beale, who has been associated fosome time past with Wingatui horses, is .-likely to settle at Riccarton after the Cup Meeting. The Wingatui trainer S. G. Ware will probably return from Victoria before the end of the month. The trip should have at least paid its way. The Riccarton trainer W. J. Jennings has had the four-year-old Frontage by Arrowsmith from Front Rank, placed under his care. Frontage has not had much racing but he is a likely sort who should stay well. Many were surprised when Arctic King was scratched for the New Zealand Cup, but his rehandicap took him t* only 31b below Cuddle and Kiltowyn, and if he had beaten them homo he would have been a hard horse *o place in future. Should he have won there would have, of course, been satisfactory compensation, but that was the hard part. At the Slonyhurst Stud last-week, Shuffle, by Solferino from Tinihanga produced a dead foal by Winning Hit. This was an unfortunate experience for the stud, as Shuffle's only previous foal, Paper Slipper, is a brilliant galloper who is likely to develop into a gooa performer. Purse, in winning the Waimala Handicap at Gisborne' on Saturday, was recording her first win since she was sold by the trustees of the late Mr. W. H. Ballinger last January. She was then bought by Mr. N. C. Hyde, of Gisborne for only 37igs. but so far it | must have been a fairly costly investment. She was much over-assessed by the East Coast handicappers another transfer to Gisborne. but now she has moved down to a better mark. Golden Blonde, easy winner of the Juvenile Stakes at Gisborne last Saturday, is only a two-year-old, and she adds another to the winning number of Defoe's gets, only one or two of whom have appeared in puolic without recording at least one success. She is a chestnut daughter of the Polydamon mare Crisis, the dam also of False Scent and Actaeon, and she is owned by Mr. E. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne. At the Avondale Meeting she ran a promising third to Gallio and Nolium. The following riding engagements have been made for the first day oC the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting:—A. E. Ellis, Vintage, Emissary. I Beau Gallante, Top Rank. Wild Chase, and Fracas; L. J. Ellis. Cuddle. Knockfin, Chidden, Moonbeam, and Paper ■ Slipper; M. Kirwan, Gold Cross: D Cotton, Riptide; R. Beale.
