MANX SOCIETY
MEETING AND CONCERT
The Manx Society of Wellington held its annual meeting followed by an entertainment in. the society's rooms on Saturday night. There was a large attendance, and at the meeting opportunity was taken to present the retiring secretary (Mr. J. Oates) with a handsome cake stand. Mrs. T. E. Corkill was elected as a life member of the society. The following officers were also elected:—President, Mr. J. J. Watterson; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. L. C. Moors, J. F. Turnbull, A. Quayle, and J. J. Oates; hon. secretary, Mr. C. Southward; hon. treasurer, Mr. R. M. Watterson; hod. auditor, Mr. Quayle; committee, Mesdames Clarke, Kelly (2), Paterson, Oates, Southward, Alexander, Quayle, Miss Constance Kelly, and Messrs. S. Clarke and Alexander.
A good entertainment followed, the artistic programme being arranged by ( Mr. J. Paterson, and every item being* "truly Manx." Traitional folk songs of the Isle of Man were sung by Misses K. Sawyer, McKinley, G. Gaudin, and the Manx Melody Four (comprising Messrs. Watterson, Southward, Quayle, and Oates). Miss Jeanette Briggs and Miss Joan Maplesden played the accompaniments. Pleasing elocutionary numbers were ably given by Miss Constance Kelly and Mr. J. B. Thomson. Dainty posies of spring flowers were presented to the ladies. 7 Mr. J. J. Watterson gave a short address on ".Tymwald Day," which was much enjoyed.
Supper was served by the committee, and later under, the direction of Mr. Steve Clarke the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. - Good music was supplied by Mr. D. Clarke, and several extras were played by Miss Maria Boolieris, these also being greaV ly appreciated. The singing of the Manx Anthem and of "Auld Lang Syne" concluded a memorable night. ■
WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
TAITA MEETING
A meeting of the Taita Women's Institute was held recently, Mrs. S. Craven presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors. A sugarbag competition was held, and won by Mrs. G. Harris with Mrs. McArthur second. With the members' permission it was decided that all entries be shown at the Hutt Valley Poultry and Pigeon Show. A demonstration on glove malting was given by Mrs. Waite, who was heartily thanked and presented with a potted maiden-hair fern. An item by the Madrigal Circle and the National Anthem brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close.
