SHIPPING BALL
REMARKABLE SUCCESS
GAY AND TROPICAL SCENE
Even the flags and lavish amount-"Sf bunting which adorned the vestibule :" hafdly prepared one for the decorar tions in'- the ballroom of St. Francis Hall last night, when the fourteenth annual Shipping Ball was held. The hall, which has been very beau- , tifully'decorated on. many occasions, l- has never looked gayer—it was liter--1 ally a blaze of colour. Almost the entire expanse of wall space, great as * it is, was covered with bunting, and even the great, tall windows were com- ; pletely covered by enormous flags. In addition to this, white and red lifebuoys were bung on the walls, and the ensigns, "pennants, and house ' flags of the various shipping companies were suspended overhead and 1 hung from the balcony. But the • masterpiece which made the hall look totally different from other occasions was the stage setting. PALMS AND YELLOW SANDS. ~~A ship at anchor in a glorious, sunlit bay was depicted, as it were, from the shore of a tropical land. This was the fascinating scene on the drop scene at the back of the stage. Coconut palms and yellow sands were in the foreground, and the actual stage properties contained the scene, and made it very realistic. There were ferns and greenery, and over the heads of the orchestra (the orchestra played on the stage) seagulls "hovered." From a white lighthouse, to the rear of the stage, blue, white, and red lights flashed alternately, showing that : although tropical the scene represented a British port. Port and starboard lights were placed at the corners :of the stage in the foreground. "What with the new central heating in the hall arid this tropical scene it was easy to imagine oneself dancing in 'k warmer clime; - A carpeted; area below, the stage, arranged with cretonne-covered sofas and chairs, was reserved for the official party, and cabaret tables were placed all around the hall. The supper-room was also most attractively decorated, with garlands of paper streamers suspended from the lights across the ceiling and all the long tables had, placed along them at close intervals, silver epergnes, filled with imitation orange chrysanthemums and birch. It looked very gay and bright, and an excellent supper was served. Altogether it is no wonder that this ball is always such a popular event, with so much thought and energy behind it. There was a very large attendance last night, and the ball was a great success from the outset. The chaperons for the occasion were Mrs. E. V. Bevan. (who wore a frock of black velvet), Mrs. N. D. Binnie (wine velvet), Mrs. W. M. Luke (black frock with blue), Mrs. J. W. Matthewson (black with coloured flowers), Mrs; W. T. Rae (chartreuse green crepe), Mrs. A. H.
