SIR HERBERT HART, K.B.E.

Brigadier-General Sir Herbert Hart, K.8.E., C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., V.D., has been Administrator of Western Samoa since April, 1931, but he is to retire from that- position next month. Born in Carterton in 1882, he adopted the law as his profession. He served in the South African War, and was awarded the Queen's Medal (with two clasps). On his return to New Zealand he took a keen interest in military affairs. He was promoted to lieutenant in December, 1908, and was appointed major in the 17th Regiment in 1912. He left for the Great War with the Main Body, N.Z.E.F., with the rank of major, in October, 1914. He was later promoted to lieutenant-colonel and given command of the Wellington Battalion, vice Lieutenant-Colonel Malone, who was killed in action in August, 1915. He was awarded the D.S.O. for his services on Gallipoli. In December, 1916, he was granted the temporary rank of colonel, and temporarily commanded the New Zealand Rifle Brigade during the absence of Brigadier-Gen-eral Fulton. In May, 1917, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, thus becoming the first officer of the New Zealand, Territorial Army to attain such rank. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1919, and was five times mentioned in dispatches.
