NAVAL VISITORS
AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON
ROUND OF ENTERTAINMENTS
The visit of the Australian Squadron to Wellington made ' last week ' a week to be remembered by all directly interested in the work among seamen. Each day the mission entertained, in various ways, between 200 and .300 men. In spite of the inclemency of the weather, nearly the whole of the original programme was carried out, and many other matches ; and functions were added. The missioner (Mr. B. J. Williams) wishes to express his gratitude to the citizens of Wellington who helped him to make the visitors welcome.
A summary of the activities of the week is as follows:—Saturday, March 23, Soccer match, R.M.S. Rangitane v. s.s. Kumara, at Lyall Bay, score 9-2; Soccer match, H.M.S. Sussex v. s.s. Tamaroa, at Lyall Bay, score 4-2. Sunday, March 24: celebration of the Holy Communion in the Mission Chapel; the Rev. Canon P. James officiating; motor tour for the petty officers and- men of the destroyers to Maori Bank; tea at the Institute, at which the hostesses were the junior branch of the Navy League; evening service; supper. Monday, March 25: Soccer match, Band of H.M.S. Sussex v. Band of H.M.A.S. Canberra, drawn game; tennis. match, H.M.S. Sussex v. Wellington Rotary Club, at Kelburn; dance at the Institute, hostesses, Mesdames Gunn and Barnett, assisted by the members of the ladies of the Harbour Lights' Guild and the Lightkeepers' Guild.
Tuesday, March 26: Cricket match, H.M.S. Sussex v. Wellington Association; motor tour for the petty officers and ratings of H.M.S. Sussex through the Hutt Valley; tea at the Institute, hostesses, the members of the Ladies' Harbour Lights' Guild; whist drive and social; prizes for the highest scores were won by Messrs. L. Polley and H. Brown, both of H.M.S. Sussex, and Messrs. J. Kane and T. Mahon, of s.s. Cumberland.
Wednesday, March 27: xcricket match, H.M.A.S. Canberra v. Grey Cabs; cricket match, combined destroyers v. Wellington Police; tennis match, H.M.A.S. Canberra v. Kelburn, at Kelburn; tennis match, teams of marines off H.M.S. Sussex, at the University tennis courts; Soccer match, H.M.S. Sussex v. s.s. Tamaroa, at Kilbirnie; motor tour for the petty officers and ratings of H.M.A.S. Canberra over Mount Victoria and round the bays. Tea at the institute, hostesses, the Ladies' Harbour Lights' Guild; dance at the Institute,1 hostesses, Mesdames G. P. H. Davidson and J. Bennie, assisted by the Lightkeepers' Guild. ... ■ .
Thursday, March 28.—Cricket match, H.M.A.S: Canberra v. Midland Club, at Kilbirnie; tennis match, petty officers and" ratings off H.M.A.S. Canberra; concert in the Institute, the programme being arranged by Mr. Felton! Kelburn, and items ' were given by Mesdames Watson,. Churches, Ashe, Miss Nola Harper, Messrs. Harper, Hollis, Felton, Caidwell, and J. Townsend, H.M.S. Sussex, and T. Wilkins, s.s. Ruahine.
Friday, March 29: Soccer match, Eoyal Marines of H.M.S. Sussex; tennis match, H.M;S. Sussex at the University courts;' social at the Institute! , Saturday, March 30: Soccer match, H.M.S. Sussex v. s.'s. Ruahine, at Kilbirnie; Soccer match, stokers of H.M.S. Sussex v. stokers of H.M.S. Diomede.
