SWIMMING
V.M.C.A. CLUB'S FUNCTION
The V.M.C.A. Swimming and Lifesaving Club held a social and dance on Saturday evening to mark'the'conclusion of the season's programme. The-function was well attended, the evening being spent in dancing and burlesque swimming and life-saving events. Some, yodelling songs rendered by Mr. 6. Hall were well received. ■■ ■ ■' . Letters of greeting were read- from Mr. K. H. Nim.mo, president of the-association, and Mr. fi. P. Staples, president of the club, who were- unavoidably absent. The various swimmers who had been'successful during the season were presented with their trophies by Dr. Montgomery Spencer, vice-president. The trophy list was as follows:—Crouch Cup scries'(6 events): L. Waller,,!; 0. Oliver, 2; J. A. Wallace, 3. President's trophy series (six events): J. A. Wallace, 1; 0, Oliver, S: E. E. Willets, 3. Consolation trophy: W. Mori. Most improved swimmer: C. 'L. Hulston. First -club-member to' finish in Peck Shield race: L. Waller. A number of life-saving awards were alsc presented, including two awards of merit and two bars to the award. The club captain, Mr. 0. S. Oliver, expressed the-members' thanks to Messrs. R.H. Nimmo, R. P. Staples. W. J. A. Chartrcs. K. S. Henry, Dr. Alex Gillies, and 'Dr. Montgomery Spencer, all of whom had donated trophies for competition.. Mr. Oliver said that members were particularly grateful to Mr. K. S. Henry, who had acted_ consistently as handicapper, judge, ■and in other capacities, and in' token o! their appreciation he presented Mr. Henry with a desk smoking stand, suitably engraved.
