JOHNSONVILLE CLUB
Consequent upon an exceptionally early opening of the Johnsonville Tennis Cbib's season, the committee was enabled to make an early start with the annual handicap .events, and most of the first-round matches in all sections have been played. 'Many keenly-contested games have, taken place, and there have been numerous surprises. Mrs. Watts, the No. 1 woman player, was eliminated by Mrs. J. Richardson. _ In the women's doubles, Mesdamcs McVicar and Quiun scored a well-merited though somewhat unexpected victory over Misses 0. and W. McDavitt, whilst in the mixed events, Watts .and. Mrs. Watts were defeated by Richardson, and Mrs. J. Richardson.
, Movement on the ladder has been slow, due to the counter-attraction 'of the handicap events. J. Watt, by defeating C. Walts, lias moved up to sixth place amongst the men, while on the women's side Miss H. Watt has moved up five rungs.
The form of individual players is yet uncertain, but players arc rapidly finding their feet. This season a system has beoaii instituted whereby a number of the older players will take under their care one or more younger players each. The response amongst both older and'younger players has been gratifying, and it is hoped that the scheme will result in considerable improvement in form as the season goes on.
