MELBOURNE, October 21.

There was fine weather and an enormous attendance at Caulfield for Cup Dny. The Duke of Gloucester arrived after the second race and remained to present the cup to the winning owner.

Quarto was fortunate to defeat the fustfinishing Ronsant in the Burwood Handicap. McCartcn won the event previously on Shakuni. Quarto was bred in New Zealand.

Princess Cynthia, a sister to Hall Mark, had an appropriate win in the Mona Nursery. She is owned by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sir Gengoult Smith. She Jed throughout. She is named after the Mayor's wife.

Whernside finished strongly in tho Gwyu Nursery. He is trained by W. Hawthorne and owned by Mr. W. R. Kemball. The New Zealander, Teak, was a disappointment.

Journal, with a brilliant run, won the Cup in the last few strides. Farndale ran a great race and Sir Simper made a wonderful effort. He was last at the homo turn and was a certainty beaten. Kuox, the rider of the winner, won the Cup previously with Denis Boy. A remarkable feature of the race was that Journal and Farndale were the last two runners at the seven furlongs. Kogilla ran a good race, and his rider, Darby Munro, stated that the weight beat him. linos said Journal began slowly, but put in a great run in the final stages. Moran, the rider of Farndale, said he thought ho had the race won at the straight entrance, but Journal was too good. Dempsey, said Sir Simper was field shy and a position near the rails beat him, but, in tho circumstances, the horse gave a remarkable performance.
