HOMING PIGEONS

The Wellington Homing Pigeon Society flew its fourth flock race from Porrotaroa, 199 miles airline. The pigeons were liberated by the stationmaster, who advised fine weather and northerly wind, which evidently provided good flying conditions, as the birds put up the splendid velocity of over a mile a minute. This is the fastest time recorded for several seasons. The following were the first eight places:—N. Boyd and Son's Leader, 1761.8 yards per minute; A. Clement's Beauty, 1740; B. Clement's Vanity Fair, 1739 5; C. Webster and Son's Gay Lad, 1735.2; J. Perrett's Little Lady, 1732.6; K. Master's Nigger Boy, 1724.8; F. Couper and Son's Silver Wings, 1724.3; Murphy and Sherwood's Blue Plane, 1721.4. The fifth race was also flown from Porootaroa. The birds evidently struck adverse conditions, but a very good race eventuated. The following are the first eight places;—N. Boyd's Leader, 4hr 56min 39.95 ec; B. Clement's Silver Bullet, 4hr 57 mm 32.55 ec; C. Webster and Son's Guy Lad, 4hr 57min 33.45 ec; A. Croskery and Son's Lyall Lady, 4hr 57ruin 39.25 ec; J. Perrett's Lady Lou, 4hr 58min lC.lseo; K. Master's Nigger Boy, 4hr 58min 50.85e0; F. Couper and Son's Venus, shr 2min B.Bsjee; N. Barnett's White Flights, shr 2min 29.65ee.

The second race on the south route was flown from Culverden, 140 miles airline. This race was confined to yearling pigeons. They were liberated by the stationmaster in cloudy weather, with a north-west wind, which was against the birds. The following are the placings:—C. Webster and Son's Southern Maid, 4hr 19min 54.55 cc; Murphy and Sherwood's Mothplane, 4hr 21min I.ssec; Dr. Gillies's My Lady, 4hr 21min 31.9 sec; J. Perrett's Pilot, 4hr 45 mm 38.1 see; F. Ferris's Flower Girl. 4hr 46min 40.8 see; B. Clement's Flash Lady, shr 14min 33.65 ec; C. Haines's Lady Buller, 6hr 19min 24.55ec.

The third race on the south route wns flown from Christchurch, 188 miles airline. The pigeons were liberated by the stationmaster in fine weather. The following are the placings:—Murphy and Sherwood's Goldplane, 4hr flSmin 36.250e; Dr. Gillies's Popular Lad, 4hr 57min 41.5 sec; ,T. Porrett's Ladybird, shr 3min 47.!) sec; C.
