SECTIONS NEAR KAITAIA
2900 ACRES OPENED UP
(By 'Telegraph—Press'Association.) AUCKLAND, July 23. Development work has been carried out during the past few months on three blocks of land, totalling 2898 acres, near Kaitaia, acquired by the Government for small farms. This work has been carried out by relief labour under the control of Mr. T. S. McMillan, of the Lands Department. Sixteen married men have been employed, and shortly a single men's camp is to be established to expedite the work. .This area.is first-class .bush land/and includes some of the best in the north. It is rolling limestone country, all facing to the . north, and is particularly well sheltered. It -is stated to be admirable for fruit growing, besides dairy farming.-The roading system is being carried on with the development of the area, and the millable timber is being worked under contract irom the Department. ' ' . , -Five sections are now ready for settlement out of the nine ou one block,-, ranging in- area from 100 to 150 acres, I and they have been balloted for. Mr. W. D. Armit, Commissioner of Crown Lands, represented the Department, and Mr. F. Holder, of Kaitaia, the applicants for the .'sections; There were 15; applicants from the married men: working on the block, 'and the following were successful:— Messrs. L. Frost, A. Morphett (Auckland); V.. L." Gregory, H. Thompson (Kaitaia), and W. Stewart (Mangonui). The other sections will be settled as soon as the initial development: work is completed. - ; . On the sections which•'■• haye^ been opened houses and cowsheds are being' built, two houses and cowsheds already being completed. As there is a good area of grass on each section, the small holders' will' be milking for the ■ dairy' factory at once." The- Department is supplying cows and all dairy utensils, so that the men'have an opportunity of paying their way from the commencement. " ■ ■ . •■-■•'. Unemployed married men.who were lately settled on two blocks near Broadwqod are making good progress, and have expressed themselves as very pleased with their lot. They are all living on the sections with their _families, and have commenced milking for supply to the dairy factory.
