SUVA, This Day. ■ _Ia opening the Fiji Legislative Coun cilthe Governor announced that the Secretary of State had approved loans of-£290,000 for public works in the colony, including new Government offices, roads, and the_Eewa bridge. The colony's reserves amounted to £509,000. Quota legislation on cotton and artificial x silk piece goods to protect the British manufacturer ' would •be introduced. .

The Governor's opinion was'that the colony's prospects were good. The sugar crop promises well and prices araruling higher; The coconut yield is particularly plentiful, although prices are low. Banana exports and prices are steady. Gold prospects are favourable, and there are prospects of tha tourist business expanding.
