STARSHOOTER'S NEW ROLE
- A probable newcomer-to the ranks of-the jumpers at Eiccarton is Starshooter, whom 6. "Barr has had irregular work for-some time.
-,Starshooter was a; very capable galloper, but as he is noW rising nine: years;:' his opportunities ;of earning further distinctioivpn the flat have-a definite limit.7-Barr has. made a great success of the other son of Archery, Don -: ; - Jose, and; Starshooter.i whojs, now thoroughly sound,; should do at r -least as well, .if their respective- galloping'performances are. any guide. .
j^x!i||ATEß MAKES GOOD^;': *The iogr-year-old maire ■ Cotoneaster, Winner ofHthe .Great Jubilee Handicap- at Keraptou Pnrk. on May 12, ranks:as one of the ba'rgaihs,: of the Turf in 'recent, years. .She was.purchased, when a foal for 40 guinea's,-ajnd ■■•began her racing in selling plates. Now>she has won the richest handicap under Jockey, Club Rules, the "Jubilee" being worth £2450. ■: Last season'; Cotoneaster won the Free Handicap at Newmarket and six other races of the aggregate value of £2962. As a two-year-old; her record was two wins—£3o9.',. Therefore the daughter" of Apple Sammy and'Coton has won for her owner, Mr. E. V T. 'Thornton-Smith, ten stakes of the aggregate value; of £5721. This is a fine return for an original outlay, of £42. ° . -. - ~
It is notable too that Cotoneaster put up the record race time of 2min 2 2-ssec for the "Jubilee." This time is a shade faster than Phar Lap's Australian and New Zealand record for VA miles, but it is considerably short of tlie world record of 2 minutes dead, which is held jointly by Top Gallant (England), Harjc Forrard (England), and Whisk Broom (America). I New Zealand's best for the distance is [Bronze Eagle's. 2min 2 4-ssec.
