BANDS OF HOPE

The Concert Chamber of the Town Hall presented an animated appearance when the Bands of Hope of Wellington met for their annual rally. Fifteen bands with their leaders occupied the ground floor, and the gallery was filled with adults. The president of the union (the Rev. K. N. Goring) presided, and with him on tho platform were the vice-presidents and'secretary of the union, Miss Mary. McLean, M.A., C.8.E., president ot the Women s Social Progress League, and Mr. J. M. Murray, of tho New Zealand Alliance. The proceedings opened with a banner parade in which twelve banners were carried in processiori around the hall, and the National Anthem was then sung. The chairman congratulated the various bands on the good delegations present, especially commending Petone, Moera, and Ngaio bands on their showing. A well-varied and splendidly rendered .programme of action songs,-dialogues, and instrumental solos followed. The-second 'part of the programme, took the form of "An Historical Review of tho Total Abstinence Movement." The Brooklyn, Hataitai, and Miramar bands co-operated in presenting this review, which was produced; by the secretary oE the union. A short, talk ■otf'Warning Signals" was given by Mr. R. L. Andrew. Greetings and congratulations from other temperance bodies were tendered by Mr. Murray. A pledge song was heartily sung by all present.'
