FINGER-PRINT SYSTEM

Few people have much knowledge of finger-prints or have an opportunity of becoming familiar with their intricacies. Last night at St. Thomas' Schoolroom, Newtown, those present learned something of the science of finger-prints from au interesting lecture delivered by Mr. F. E. Matthews, F.P.E. The lecturer said fingerprints were not alone a means of identifying criminals, but were also a means of protection to the innocent) ( After explaining in detail the classification of finger-prints and the several systems in use, Mr. Matthews dealt with the question of finger-prints, for civil purposes. He said that in the Argentine fin-ger-printing was universally used for military and electoral purposes. The system was ahso largely used in the United States. "In British East Africa the natives had to carry a card bearing a facsimile of their thumb-print. As a commercial protection, hundreds of baiiks were now using finger-prints on cheques;' insurance, railway, and other companies were also using the system for commercial protection. The lecturer answered-a number of questions, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his instructive address. The meeting was presided over by Mr. C. Cooper.-
