DOUBLE TO BAY TREE
STYLISH WIN OVER MILE
' Bay Tree, tackling a distance beyond six furlongs for the first time, was backed down to short prices in the mile Sumner Handicap, and he duly came off with tho same ease as on' Tuesday, after failing to catch the jump-out. He is obviously a I three-year-old colt above the ordinary, and it looks as if he is goiug to develop into really good class. In appearance he is everything one would expect in a colt of his breeding and excellent recent performance. After .missing the jump-out from No. -' position, the winner was quickly into his stride, and he received a lucky run through to the leaders before the field closed round. Rounding the turn he followed Tea Garden' and Bell Hill, with St. Joan alongside, but once in the straight he drove to the front effortlessly, and he was doing it comfortably at the finish to .withstand a challenge from Doiran by a length. Doiran was oue of the first away, but he was riot bustled to hold position, and settled down on the rail six or seven horses back. He finished resolutely in the straight to deprive St. Joan of second money by a neck. St. Joan, who went in promising out with the leaders' in the Avonhead Handicap on the first day, . was again always one of the front section, two or three horses out from the fence, and she fully deserved her placing. She is a four-year-old mare by Jericho, and she is on the upgrade at present. The best of the beaten horses were Fleeting Glance, Silver Sight, and' Drum Fire, but all were well up throughout, and had every apparent chance. Monipere, the next home, was finishing very fast after having been slow away, and the effort may be worth noting. Korero was also again tunning- on, but Tea Garden and Bell Hill, after being prominent to the straight, weakened when the pressure was on.
