PALANTUA'S FINE FINISH
A. day; of-.mixed fortunes .was 'brought to a close with an unexpected result in the Islington Handicap,. the sixth botliway favourite Palantua finishing with a great run in the straight to deprive Cricket Bat of the main honour.- The public's main hopes, Cylinder and Shatter, were beaten out of the places. Falantua was well placed all the way, without ever being among the leaders. Grecian Prince sdon put a big break on the field, with Jaloux - and Cricket Bat at the head of the others. With half the race over Palantua moved up past Buoyant into fourth place, and, although Martian Chief later on deprived her of this position, she proved irresistible when she lodged her claim at the distance, and after a short tussle with Cricket Bat she left him and -went on to score by three lengths. The winner is a well-bred four-year-old mare by Paladin from that successful racing ', daughter of Solferino, .Mantua, so that her brilliance should not be surprising.. She is owned by Mrs. W. Mackenzie, of Tapanui, and she is trained by F. Shaw at Wingatui. She was again ridden by W. H. Jones, formerly of Trentham, who has been associated with her in other recent successes. She went quite a- good race in the Winter Cup till on the home stretch, but until yesterday she had not tackled anything above a mile. Cricket Bat was always.handy, after an early check from Grecian Prince, ,but when it was needed he could not raise an extra effort to fight off the winner's challenge. Martian Chief did not have the best of runs, on the outside of the bunch most of the way, and although he hung on at the end he never looked like doing better thai* a place, finishing three lengths back third. Ramo and Shatter, the best' of, the others, looked prospects when they loomed up from the backl in the straight, but neither was capable of going on with it. Cylinder collapsed ■ before reaching the home stretch, shortly after he had made a likely move up to Palantua. Jaloux and Grecian Prince both stopped quickly over the last two furlongs. An inquiry by the stewards was held after the race into crossing by Grecian Prince early, causing interference to Jaloux and Cricket Bat, and as a result G. Duncan, the rider of Grecian Prince, was suspended for two months.
