COTTESMORE'S SPRINT
RACE RUN IN FAST TIME
C'ottqsmore, after two encouraging races in the Brabazon Handicap at the Hunt Meeting and in the Winter .Cup on Tuesday, continued the improvement to win the August Handicap very decisively from a first-class field rof open sprinters. It was Ms "first success since, his elevation out of hack ranks, and it was at double figures on the win machine, though he was the third favourite. ; L. J. Ellis again got Cottesmore away well from an outside marble, and his colours were always prominent. 'Cranford, Foreign Queen, and Croupier were ahead of"him■ as- they;crossed over on- to the course proper, but he was doing it better than Tuesday's sprint winner, and his challenge from the distance overwhelmed the"' two remaining -leaders, taking him on to a two lengths' victory over Cranford and Foreign Queen. A feature, about the, winners performance'was the very fast time of lmin 10 1-5 see registered. It, is a shade faster than the joint Australian record of lmin 10% see put up by Pavillion in 1930 and Tom Pinch in 1931, both at Randwick, but jt is four-fifths of a second slower than Silver Scorn's sensational under 9.11 at ■Kiccarton last February. A wind was blowing down the straight yesterday, but it.was not a strong one. '.''.■ .Cranford went a better race than he did in the Winter Cup. He managed to crib a few positions at the barrier, and, beginning well, was always in the leading division. He raced ahead of , Foreign Queen and Croupier, approaching the straight, and had charge two furlongs out, but although he withstood . Foreign Queen, ; he was quite, .unable .to, meet, the winner's challenge.- •' ■ ' '■ ■' • ' :' ' Foreign Queen ran another of her consistent ; races, ■beginning brilliantly and showing great grit at the end for one of her.size. 'At the distance it looked as- if Bhe might be second, but Cranford held her at' bay. ' . Croupier, Who was one of the hottest win favourites that have gone out in such a race for a long time, five times as well supported as .the next selection, Foreign Queen, failed after having every obvious chance, so that it is probable his first day's effort took more out of him than was realised. Spoon went &
fair race into fifth place, finishing alongside Croupier. The .-others, headed by Chrysology, Silver Ring, Master Anomaly, and Ranelagh, were never seriously in the fight. Master Anomaly and Grecian Prince were again hurdled off at the barrier.
