COMPETITION OF RETIRED MEN
"The unemployment problem is >ever before us and from day to day we feel it more difficult to look upon the bright side of things, rspecially" when we see public bodies handinpr over work to retired civil servants that should be undertaken by the ordinary citizen" (writes "Citizen"). "There are many professional men in private practice fully capable of doing the work who are at their wits' end to maintain an existence. There v probably no law to prohibit highly paid pensioned Government officers from competing against their less fortunate fellow-citizens, but this would not* debar the Pensions Department, and the Government Unemployment Department in particular, from pointing out to' the pensioned the inadvisability of accepting commissions during these times of stress. Local bodies, and especially those who expect to finance works out of the unemployment funds, should be notified that the Government looks with disfavour upon the employment of Government pensioned officers."..
