NEW LEASE GRANTED
.. The Shandon Golf Club, '.vhich has a lease of sixty-three acres of- Gear Island1 -at a rental of £240 per annum, with an imexpircd term of two years, applied to - the owners of the "island," the' Hutt River Board,.at its. meeting- yesterday for the (.•aiiceliation o£ the present lease and the making of a fresh lease for a term of seven years at an annual rental of £ 300. The club also requested , the inclusion of a small area not iv the1 present lease. ,The-chairman of the board, Mr. F. J. Jones, said he favoured granting.the application. Portions of tho ground were in need of fertilisers and other improvements which' the club was not prepared to undertake without.an. assured tenancy. The club wns a good tenant, and tho purjiose for ■ "which, the area'was being used \yas in line with what he hoped the * "'island" would ultimately become—a park after the nature of Hyde: Park or KcnaingtouPark in London.
Mr. G. Mitchell 'considered the present a bad time to make the alteration.' A much better rental could be secured in .■ two years' time... So ■ far ■as fertilisers were concerned, the club could get- the i'«U \iso -of any expenditure "within two years. The sum of £300 was too;low a rental and he considered £350 could be obtained* : The board was budly in need of funds... ', ... ■ . '. ■ Mr. .J. Brasell said that £300 was a very fan1 rent. Tho board was sure of its money and the club was a good 'ten-ant,-and he was therefore quite prepared ■ to' agree to'theprpposal. • ■ ' Mr. M. J.
