COLLEGE CELEBRATION

To mark the opening day of the Ot-. .taws* Conference," .-an interesting, celebration took place at Wellington Girls' College yesterday; -The' importanee'and value of tho "spirit of Empire" was impressed oii the girls by* the various speakers, and' a programme of • appropriate songs and recitations war: presented by the school. /Miss Greig, speaking on "Women of the Empire and Medical Research in the Empire.'V specially mentioned Elizabeth Fry , (who reformed the prisons system) and' Florence Nightingale (who raised, the prof ession of nursing to. its high state).

The Eev,. E. S. Watson v spoke of "Service to the Empire," defining it as "the rent we pay for our place on earth." . He pointed .out the meaning of service, the reasons for serving the Empire, and the means by which each one, personally,: could serve. He concluded by exhorting the school to cultivate; the spirit of Empire. - ■ . Several songs were sung by the scholars, who had been trained by 'Miss Ward. Recitations and readings on historical subjects were given by Misses Patricia 'yon Keisenberg, Margaret Johnston, Joyce Dinnison, Mary Martin, Hilary Henderson, and Margaret Grant. An instrumental duet was played by Misses Pinfold a_nd Blamires. [Miss Kefshaw was at the piano.
